Eyeglasses have come a long way from their humble beginnings as purely functional tools. Today, they sit at the intersection of technology and high fashion — and the journey to get here is fascinating.

In the 13th century, the first rudimentary spectacles appeared in Italy, held up to the face or balanced on the nose. By the 18th century, side arms (temples) were introduced, making glasses wearable as we know them today.

The 1950s and 60s were a golden era for eyewear fashion. Cat-eye frames became synonymous with feminine glamour, while thick horn-rimmed glasses defined the intellectual aesthetic. Icons like Audrey Hepburn and Buddy Holly made their frames as recognisable as their faces.

The 1980s brought bold, oversized frames in every colour imaginable, while the 90s swung to minimalism with tiny, wire-rimmed lenses.

Today, we’re in a golden age of eyewear diversity. Luxury houses like Gucci, Prada, and Dior release seasonal eyewear collections rivalling their clothing lines. Vintage styles are constantly being reimagined, and sustainable materials like recycled acetate and bio-based plastics are reshaping the industry.

Eyeglasses are no longer just something you wear — they’re something you choose.
